Thank you for visiting the Burleson Police Department on the World Wide Web. We are very proud of our department and welcome the chance to share our success with the citizens of Burleson.

The Burleson Police Department was the first department in the state of Texas to be accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, located in Fairfax, Virginia. We were re-accredited in November of 2000 and again in 2003 and 2006, maintaining our professional status on an international level.

Chief Tom Cowan
Chief Tom Cowan assumed command of the Burleson Police Department in November of 2001. Chief Cowan believes in building strong communities through education, communication and cooperation. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy.

Commander Havens is over the operations division, Commander Sandifer is in charge of the administrative division, and Commander Aaron heads the professional standards /community services division.

Fight back against identity theft


National Night Out

Do you want to make a difference in your neighborhood and your community? Then talk to five or six neighbors, form a block party, and join the National Night Out celebration on Tuesday, Aug. 3.

This is the 27th National Night Out event, a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) and by Target stores. Read the news release for more details.

If your group has an event scheduled make sure to contact the Burleson Police Department’s community resource officers – Mike Owen and Jack Goleman – at 817-426-9910 or e-mail cro@burlesontx.com so that they can get your National Night Out event on the calendar.


Red Light Camera ProgramThe initiative’s goal is to reduce deaths and injuries caused when motorists run red lights. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, nearly 2 million crashes occur in intersections each year. In 2005, red light running resulted in 800 fatalities and more than 165,000 injuries. Learn more about the program here.

Sign up for crime alerts!

Do you want to know what’s happening in your neighborhood and your community? Do you want to know how to make your neighborhood unappealing to criminals?

Sign up for crime alerts, issued via e-mail by the Burleson Police Department’s Community Resource Officer Mike Owen. The CRO reviews offense reports and crime trends, then alerts those who sign up for his e-mail service.

Wise Eyes program

The Burleson Police Department wants you on their team.

Burleson Wise Eyes is an e-mail alert service, and more. Those who subscribe (e-mail mowen@burlesontx.com) receive timely alerts with detailed descriptions of suspects involved in major crimes as well as recent crime trends and suspicious activity. But, Burleson Wise Eyes participants are on the alert all the time thanks to a free Wise Eyes notebook to record information needed by the police dispatcher and officer.

The Burleson Police Department has been selected as a National Award Winner for outstanding participation in the 26th Annual National Night Out crime, drug and violence prevention program in 2009.

2009 BPD Awards

More than 20 Burleson Police Department officers and civilian employees were honored at the annual police awards banquet on Jan. 22. 2009.

Officer Larry Sparks won Officer of the Year; Sgt. Roger Hall was awarded Supervisor of the Year; Officer Jae Berg earned Rookie of the Year; and Telecommunications Operator LaJean Whiteside won Employee of the Year.

The Burleson Police Department Accreditation Process is Underway

A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), will arrive on Saturday, April 25, to examine all aspects of the Burleson Police Department’s policy and procedures, management, operations, and services, according to Burleson Police Chief Tom Cowan.

As part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Monday, April 27, at 7 p.m.  The session will be conducted in the meeting room of the Burleson Public Library, located at 248 S.W. Johnson Ave.
