Boards and Commissions

The City Council is committed to appointing highly qualified and dedicated people to its boards, and commissions. If you think you may be interested in serving on a board or commission, please print and complete an application and mail it to 141 W. Renfro, attention City Secretary, or fax to 817-426-8099, or submit the application on-line. If the board or commission you wish to serve on has few or no openings, the City Council encourages you to still apply. The Council uses this pool of applicants to fill posts vacated during the year and to create ad hoc task forces or temporary committees needed throughout the year. SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

PLANNING AND ZONING COMMISSION - The Planning and Zoning Commission's responsibility is to approve plans for subdivisions and make recommendations to the City Council regarding land use issues, re zoning requests, amendments to the zoning ordinance and other development regulations, and amendments to and updates of the Comprehensive Master Plan. The Commission consists of seven members. The commission meets the first and third Tuesday of the month. For further information, please contact Stephen A. ZONING BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT - The Zoning Board of Adjustment is a quasi-judicial body created by the City Council under the authority granted by the Burleson Zoning Ordinance and the Texas Zoning Enabling Act. The Board may only act in areas that it is given express authority by law. The major responsibilities of this board are: hear and decide appeals in the enforcement of the zoning ordinance; hear and decide requests for variances from the terms of the zoning ordinance; and hear and decide cases involving the reconstruction, extension or enlargement of non-conforming uses and structures. LIBRARY BOARD - The Library Board is primarily responsible for making informed recommendations to the City Council and Library staff on matters of library policy and long-range service plans. The Board consists of seven members. The board meets the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Board members may be asked to participate at additional events. BUILDING CODES AND STANDARDS BOARD - The purpose of this board is to recommend building code ordinances or amendments for adoption, and hearing appeals from building code interpretations made by the building official or fire marshal. The board consists of seven members and two alternates with the following qualifications: 1. two (2) licensed electricians, at least one (1) of which shall be a master electrician; and 2. two (2) licensed plumbers, at least one (1) of which shall be a master plumber; and 3. one (1) building contractors; and 4 one (1) person holding a license or certification from the Texas Commission on Fire Protection; and 5. one (1) licensed heat and air conditioning contractor. PARKS BOARD - The Parks and Recreation Board was created for the purpose of advising both the City Council and the Parks and Recreation Department regarding the planning and development of park and recreational facilities and regulations governing their use. The board consists of seven members. The board meets when it has business. Special sessions are held as needed. ANIMAL SHELTER ADVISORY COMMITTEE - The purpose of this committee is to assist the animal shelter regarding compliance with the State Health and Safety Code. Additionally, the committee may provide recommendations of ways to improve the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the City's animal control program, if such input is requested by City Council. CEMETERY BOARD - Recommends policies, rules and regulations for the Burleson Memorial Cemetery. The Board consists of 7 members. The Board meets when it has business. For further information, please contact City Secretary Amanda McCrory at 817-447-5400 ext. 277.

OLD TOWN DESIGN STANDARDS REVIEW COMMITTEE - The Old Town Design Standards Review Committee has the responsibility to review and comment on all proposed buildings or improvements within the Old Town Overlay District. Members must have general knowledge of the community and interest in planning and development of Old Town. The committee provides the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council with comments and recommendations regarding development in Old Town. The DSRC is made up of five regular members and two alternate members. At least one member must live in or own a business located in the Old Town Overlay District, and that one member must be the seated president of the Burleson Heritage Foundation.
