Employees of ARC International Corporation of Arlington unload and stack the computers, TVs, and other electronics that were dropped off Sept. 22 during the E-Waste Recycling Event hosted by the City of Burleson and Keep Burleson Beautiful, Inc.

Do you have electronic items to dispose of? The City of Burleson and Keep Burleson Beautiful are coming to your rescue in May.

The electronic recycling event is slated for 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, in the parking lot of First National Bank of Burleson at Alsbury Boulevard and I-35W. E-Waste Collections is coordinating the event. Round2 Technologies, Inc. will process the recyclables.

Burleson residency is not required to participate. Material from both homes and businesses will be accepted.

There will be a fee for TVs ($10 to $30, depending on size); computer hard drive erasing, $10; and air conditioning unit Freon disposal, $15.

All other electronic items can be dropped off free of charge.

Env. Services Specialist Bianca Chafin

Bianca Chafin, the City of Burleson’s environmental services specialist, helps unload computer equipment at the Sept. 22 E-Waste Recycling Event in Burleson.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), only 10 percent of American households recycle unwanted electronics. According to a study by Griffith University, 40 percent of the lead content in landfills comes from electronic waste. Lead and other substances corrode and are released into the ground and atmosphere, creating environmental problems.

For more information call Bianca Chafin, City of Burleson environmental programs specialist and executive director of Keep Burleson Beautiful, at 817-447-5410, ext. 269, or e-mail bchafin@burlesontx.com.

Household Hazardous Waste

Next HHW Collection Event
May 3, 2008
9 a.m. - 11a.m.
Municipal Service Center
1675 John Jones Drive (FM 731)

Household hazardous waste collection events are held twice a year in the City of Burleson. These on-site events are made possible through the City's contract with the City of Fort Worth Environmental Management Department, which owns and operates the Crud Cruiser and the Environmental Collection Center. The events are only available for residents of the City of Burleson and only material from residences can be accepted. Participants should bring their water or solid waste bill as proof of residency.

Residents who do not want to wait until the next collection event in Burleson, can take their household hazardous wastes to the Environmental Collection Center (ECC). The ECC is open Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is located at 6400 Bridge Street in Fort Worth. There is no fee for dropping off your household hazardous waste, however, residents must take a City of Burleson water or solid waste bill as proof of residency.

Crud Cruiser
The Crud Cruiser collected household hazardous waste in Burleson on Nov. 10.
The City of Burleson’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection event on Nov. 10 kept more than 15,000 pounds of waste out of the landfill.

The most popular household hazardous waste was latex paint, all 10,000 pounds of it. According to statistics from the Environmental Collection Center (ECC) of Fort Worth, which coordinated the collection with the City of Burleson, 1,700 pounds of oil-based paint, 600 pounds of liquid pesticide, 600 pounds of pool chemicals, and 550 pounds of oil were turned in to the Crud Cruiser at the City’s service center. Also turned in were flammable liquids, flammable loose packs, acids, bases, solid pesticides, oil filters, aerosol cans, household batteries, and car batteries.

Residents from 141 Burleson households participated in the event, which spanned just two hours.

HHW Event

Public Works Coordinator Darlene Peacock and Environmental Programs Specialist Bianca Chafin talk to drivers as they drop off their household hazardous waste at the collection event at the City’s service center.

The twice per year events are not the only days that Burleson residents can dispose of household hazardous waste. The ECC is open Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information about what the ECC will accept, call 817-871-5257 or log on to the City of Fort Worth web site at www.fortworth.gov, click on “government,” “department,” “environmental management,” then “household chemical.”

Landscaping and Water Conservation Tips and Techniques

Texas SmartScape helps homeowners learn to use native and adapted plants to beautify their yards. These hardy plants require less water, fertilizers, and pesticides, all while providing a green and beautiful outdoor environment that native birds and butterflies will love to call home. North Texans can learn more about using native and adapted plants by visiting www.txsmartscape.com.

SmartScape provides the following watering tips to help you conserve water this season:

  • 50% of your irrigation can be lost to evaporation. Water between 6 p.m. and 10 a.m. to avoid this.
  • Don’t let your money run down the storm drain! Minimize irrigation runoff.
  • Water deeply and infrequently to help plants develop deep roots.
  • Use 3" of organic mulch in bed areas to reduce watering frequency.
  • Don’t bag ‘em! Leave grass clippings on the lawn to help maintain moisture.
  • Measure how much water you’re placing on the lawn to ensure you aren't watering too much.
Don't water in the rain - install a rain sensor on irrigation systems.
  • Drip irrigation is more efficient; it delivers almost 95% of the water to plants.
  • Water every 5 to 7 days in the summer and every 15 to 20 days in the winter.

The North Texas Clean Air Coalition

Recognizing the potential negative consequences the region could face if we failed to achieve clean air compliance, several local organizations stepped up to the plate in 1993, forming the North Texas Clean Air Coalition (NTCAC) to help address the issue. The group's founding members include the North Texas Commission, the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Dallas Chamber and the North Central Texas Council of Governments. Dallas Area Rapid Transit and the Fort Worth Transportation Authority joined forces with the group shortly thereafter. From the start, the group's mission has been to promote voluntary actions to improve air quality in North Texas.

For more information go to www.northtexasair.org.

Water Resource Education

The City of Burleson is now a partner in a region-wide effort to raise awareness about watershed resources in North Central Texas.  The E-Life project is funded by the Texas Soil and Water Conservation Board.  The project is a partnership between local, state, and federal agencies, the North Central Texas Council of Governments, and the local CBS television affiliate.  It is designed to deliver a series of television news segments and a specialized website to provide information about the pollution of waterways and how to prevent it.

Visit the NCTCOG website and click on the link to E-Life to learn more about the watershed resources in the local region and to find out about the numerous pollution prevention and environmental education programs being hosted by participating local governments.
