Operator Qualifications


The Burleson Police Department offers telecommunicators an exciting and rewarding public service position with excellent benefits and a retirement plan. This position receives emergency and non-emergency service calls and transmits messages via various communication systems consisting of 911 emergency lines, TDD, radio, and data terminals which operate on a seven day, 24 hour basis.

Telecommunications Operator Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Type 40 wpm
  • Must obtain Basic Telecommunicator Certification within one year and TCIC/NCIC certification within six months from date of hire
  • Must have basic knowledge of computers
  • No felony convictions
  • Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required skills and abilities is qualifying

Skill and ability to:

  • Interpret rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Prepare clear, concise and understandable written documents.
  • Coordinate multiple events and emergency responses.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Read, write, spell, and speak in a clear and concise manner.
  • Make sound decisions using all available information.
  • Read and interpret written instructions, city and county maps.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other agency personnel and the public.
  • Accomplish tasks in a controlled and competent manner while working under stress.
  • Effectively operate the public safety computer systems, teletype, radio dispatch consoles, telephones and other associated equipment.
  • Normal hearing, vision correctable to 20/20 and have normal color vision.
  • Must be willing to work varied shifts, holidays, nights and weekend work required.

Preferred qualifications:
  • Prior Public Safety dispatching experience.
  • Bilingual skills strongly desired.
  • Some college preferred.
