What's new in the future of my parks?
Dignitaries broke ground on the Recreation Center on Dec. 1, 2008. The two-story 65,000-square-foot recreation center, scheduled to open in March of 2010, is being constructed on 6 acres of the existing Bartlett Park on Summercrest Blvd.. The site was once home to softball and baseball fields, which are being moved to Chisenhall Park.
The family fitness center will feature two 1,400-square foot meeting rooms equipped with audiovisual capabilities; a patio for large group events, including receptions and weddings; an indoor swimming area complete with water slides, vortex pools, a current river and a 5-lane lap pool; a 10,000-square-foot aerobics center; and a walking track suspended above twin gymnasium floors.
The second level of the center will be home to more than 70 types of exercise equipment, both cardio and strength training (treadmills, ellipticals, stairclimbers) and will include room for Aerobic, Tai Chi, Pilates and gymnastics. Dancing, tumbling and exercise classes will all be taught on the second level. Trainers with nutritional and dietetic backgrounds will join the recreation center staff.
The Center will also include an outdoor pool.
Chisenhall Farms Sports Complex groundbreaking is June 17. In Phase 1, Chisenhall Farms will include one football field, eight dedicated baseball fields, two joint-use baseball/softball fields, three dedicated softball fields, and two day-use-only softball fields. All the fields in Phase 1 are fully lighted. In Phase 2, the joint-use fields will become dedicated baseball fields and the day-use fields will be completed with lights and cover. The park will also include two concession stands/restrooms, a play area, pavilion, covered spectator seating, backstop netting and numerous other amenities.
Chisenhall Farms Sports Complex construction is funded through a combination of voter-approved general obligation bonds and gas royalty revenues. The park is expected to be open for spring league 2010 play.
|
How are my parks built, maintained and paid for?
The majority of funding for park construction and maintenance is from what we call the general fund. This fund is a mixture of many types of fees collected by the city including Ad Valorem (property tax). An additional source of funding is contributed by land developers in the form of a park development fund. More recently, park development has been funded through natural gas royalties derived from park land. Land for the acquisition of parks is either acquired from a subdivision development as it is designed or it is purchased outright in a location that the city feels is lacking in park supply. |
Who can I call if I have a suggestion or a complaint?
The Director of Parks is Peter Krause and he can be reached at 817-295-8168, or by email at pkrause@burlesontx.com. |
