The DARE program was 1 of the first community programs started here and has been 1 of the most valuable assets in police - community relations. The primary purpose of this program is to teach students about the dangers of drugs, peer pressure, and to build self esteem. They have added classes on identifying and reporting bullying. This was the first program to place an officer in the school environment and has had a positive impact in bridging the gap between police and our youth, as well as building a partnership with our school teachers and officials.
There are 2 DARE certified officers that provide the program at each middle school campus at the sixth grade level. The salary for these officers is funded jointly by the City of Burleson and the Burleson Independent School District. Funding from donations associated with this program are also shared by the 2 agencies and other funding comes from donations from local businesses and civic organizations.
