Level 1

Introduction to Water Skills (Ages 6 & up)

  • Days:  Friday or Saturday classes
Level 1 participants learn to:
  • Enter and exit water safely
  • Submerge mouth, nose and eyes
  • Exhale under water through mouth and nose
  • Open eyes under water, pick up submerged object
  • Change direction while walking or paddling
  • Roll over from front to back and back to front with support
  • Explore swimming on front and back using arm and leg actions with support
  • Use a life jacket
  • Explore floating on front and back with support
Level 1 aims to make students learn to feel comfortable in the water.

Exit Skills Assessment

Child must be able to enter the water independently, using either the ladder, steps or side, travel at least 5 yards, bob 3 times, then safely exit the water. The child must be able to glide on front for at least 2 body lengths, roll to a back float for 3 seconds and recover to a vertical position in order to graduate to Level 2.


Weekday Lessons

All sessions include four 55-minute classes one day per week for four weeks.
  • Session 1: Week of March 7 –28
  • Session 2: Week of April 4 –25
  • Session 3: Week of May 2 –23
Times
  • Fridays at 3:30 p.m.

Saturday Lessons 

All sessions include four 55-minute classes on consecutive Saturdays.
  • Session 1: March 11 –April 1
  • Session 2: April 15 –May 6
  • Session 3: May 13 –June 3
