Vietnam Veterans Celebration

Saturday, March 25, 2017

The sixth annual Vietnam Veterans Celebration is slated for Saturday, March 25, at 1 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Plaza in Burleson. The Burleson Heritage Foundation and the City of Burleson are hosting the event. Jan. 12, 1962, marked the United States’ first combat mission against the Viet Cong. In 2012, on the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War, President Obama issued a proclamation declaring March 29 as Vietnam Veterans Day. March 29, 1973, was the date that the last of the troops left Vietnam. The site of the local celebration is Veterans Memorial Plaza, 298 E. Renfro St., near Renfro Street and I-35W. The City-owned plaza includes a fountain and room for 3,000-plus bricks engraved with the names of local service members. The plaza also includes a bronze eagle and Purple Heart memorial that were unveiled in 2009; the Johnson County Veterans Monument that was added in 2010; and a POW monument that was added in 2011.
