Do you want to be a link between the youth of Burleson and the Burleson City Council? If you are between 13 and 19 years old as of June 1, 2019, you can be nominated to serve on the Burleson Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC).
The goal of the MYC is to identify current issues affecting area youth, advise the city council on teen-related matters, plan activities and projects for Burleson youth, and maintain youth council bylaws and structure. To be eligible for the council, you must be 13-19 years old, live in Burleson or in Burleson’s extraterritorial jurisdiction, have a passion to be the voice of Burleson youth, and show leadership qualities within the community.
There are three main steps to be selected for a seat on the MYC. A student must be nominated by an adult and the student must fill out a youth questionnaire; then the student may be asked to participate in an interview. After all interviews, the student will be notified of membership before May 19, 2019. All MYC selections will be submitted to the Burleson City Council for approval. New MYC members will be appointed at the May 20 city council meeting, for a one year term - June 1, 2019 to May 31, 2020.
More information about the nomination process is online. Any school official can submit the nomination via an online form. Nominations and applications must be received by April 1, 2019 to be considered for a June 1 appointment to the MYC.
The Mayor’s Youth Council was created May 10, 2007, through a city council resolution. The city council officially appointed the first youth council in January 2008. The MYC meets once a month. For more about the MYC and the nominations, contact Lisa Poteete, at 817-426-9682.
