Frequently Asked Questions
What are General Obligation Bonds?
General Obligation (GO) bonds are funds borrowed by the city for specific public purposes. Bonds enable the city to complete larger projects that would otherwise be unaffordable or unachievable. Authorization to borrow GO bonds must be approved by voters, and the amount of money borrowed, plus interest, is repaid over a period of years using the city's property tax revenue.
When is the last time the City held a bond election?
The last time the City of Burleson held a bond election was in 2013.
If the bonds are approved, will property tax rates go up?
No. The projects are timed to ensure no increase to the property tax rate.
How were the capital project needs selected?
A 15-person Special Citizens Bond Advisory Committee was appointed by the Mayor and City Council to review, prioritize, suggest, and recommend bond projects going before the voters. The 15 volunteers met over several months obtaining feedback and recommendations from city staff. Information regarding this process can be found at BurlesonTX.com/2022Bond.
If the bonds are approved, how soon will capital projects begin?
Capital Projects listed in the bond program will begin in the latter part of fiscal year 2022.
If the bonds are approved, when will all the projects be completed?
City council desires for all programs to be completed within seven years of voter approval.
What will happen if the bond propositions do not pass?
City will not be able to issue any certificates of obligation for the projects listed for three years.
What if all the bond authorization is not used?
Once all of the approved projects have been funded and completed, any remaining bond proceeds can be used for additional projects similar to the approved bond proposition.
