Water Heaters
General Information
A permit is required for the installation of a water heater, which must comply with the requirements of the International Plumbing Code and International Residential Code.
State law allows a homeowner to perform this work on his/her homestead. However, any other person performing this work must be a licensed plumber registered as a contractor with the City of Burleson.

Inspections
An inspection will be required upon completion of work. The inspection request line number is 817-426-9636. This is an automated line that is available 24 hours a day. Our office hours are 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Any inspection called in before 8 a.m. will be made that day and inspections called in after 8 a.m. will be made the following day.

Specific Requirements
Gas Water Heaters
- Upper and lower combustion air must be installed when a water heater is installed in a closet area.
- There must be a 1" clearance on water heater vent from all combustible materials an manufacturer's specifications must be observed.
- The maximum length of flex gas pipe is 36", 1/2" minimum size.
- Water heater pan must be approved for application.
- There must be an approved pan with a 1" drain line to outside or approved receptor.
- If installed in garages and attics, water pipes must be insulated.
- The pressure relief valve discharge pipe shall discharge outside not more than 6" above ground/ floor level or into an approved indirect waste receptor.
- There must be an isolation valve on cold water pipe of heater to shut off water.
- If installed in a garage there must be pan drain pipes to floor or outside.
