What is a prairie?

Prairies are ecosystems consisting of grasslands and wildflowers. Historically, wildfires created by indigenous people maintained prairies by eliminating encroaching bushes and trees. Roaming bison and other grazing animals eat the tall grasses.

Prairies grow on many soil types including rich clay, sandy, and limestone soils.
