Sanitary Sewer Smoke Testing
Smoke Testing
The city of Burleson conducts smoke testing on the sanitary sewer system at various locations throughout the city. The purpose of the smoke testing is to identify areas of the wastewater collection system in need of repair or maintenance. It may also identify areas on private property where repairs are needed such as damaged service lines, faulty or failing connections inside the home or business and roof drains that may be connected to the sanitary sewer which will need to be disconnected.
Locations of Aug. 5-8 Smoke Testing
- Oxford Street
- Penny Lane
- Hanover Street
- Easy Street
- N.E. Murphy Road
- Hemphill Street
What to Expect During Smoke Testing
Before any sewer smoke testing is conducted, City of Burleson staff will notify residents in the affected areas by placing door hangers with the planned testing dates.
Residents with respiratory conditions such as chronic asthma, emphysema, or other breathing concerns should avoid direct exposure to the smoke. If you have respiratory issues, please contact BTX 311 at 817-426-9600 once smoke testing is announced.
Smoke should not enter your home if your plumbing is properly installed and functioning, and all drain “traps” are filled with water. Drains that are used frequently are typically safe. If you are unsure, run water down each drain for at least one minute to ensure the trap is not dry. Dry traps can allow sewer gases into the home and are most commonly found in rarely used basement floor drains or unused fixtures.
If smoke does enter your home or business, please note that the smoke used for testing is:
Non-toxic
Non-staining and odorless
Harmless to people, pets, plants, food, and household materials
Not a fire hazard
The presence of smoke inside your property may indicate a plumbing issue that could allow sewer gases or odors to enter. Should this occur, contact BTX 311 at 817-426-9600. Be prepared to provide your name, address, and phone number.
